MARTIN Adams’ quest for a third successive BDO World Darts Championship was ended by Tony O’Shea at Lakeside on Thursday night.
Deeping legend “Wolfie” went down 5-2 against “The “Silverback” in a thrilling quarter-final at Frimley Green, ending his three-year grip on the BDO’s top title.
The 55-year-old four-time champion hadn’t dropped a set ahead of the last eight showdown, but found O’Shea – and man who hadn’t beaten him since 2005 – in unstoppable form, with a maximum 170 checkout the highlight.
Wolfie was far from off form, with a stunning 161 finish the pick of a number of top throws. But it wasn’t to be, leaving the England skipper to reflect on what might have been.
Adams said: “The hat-trick was my dream and that’s not going to happen this time, but I’ll be back next year to start again.
“It was a great game of darts and fair play to Tony, but it has been a difficult week for me in many ways.
“I’ve had a bit of a problem with my neck that has affected me but I kept it under wraps as I didn’t want my opponents to know.
“But I’m not trying to use that as an excuse and I’m not at all disappointed with the way I played.
“It was just that everything I produced, Tony came back with something stronger.”
