REIGNING BDO world darts champions Martin Adams and Trina Gulliver helped a Spalding event raise £1,400 for Help for Heroes.

Deeping-based England skipper “Wolfie” and the nine-time ladies’ champion Gulliver, dubbed the golden girl of darts, were invited by organiser Ian Tilley to compete at the Spalding Services Club exhibition.

Between them they played 16 singles games (701, one leg) against local players, then one game of 701 pairs with Anne Parker and Matt Croft – who had lucky programme numbers on the night.

Gulliver’s first four opponents of the evening were Lisa Brooks, Craig Venman, Lisa Merrison, and Ben Shaw, while Adams took on Ady Johnson, Karle Rolfe, Nigel Morris and Chris Knevitt.

All eight matches went the way of the decorated duo.

Later in the night, both James Langford and Duncan Hunt were fortunate enough to beat Gulliver, while birthday-girl Mikki Hewitt and the talented Casey Horspool also gave her a good game.

Ash Allen and Gary Mace then pushed Wolfie all the way, before Mick Allen stunned the legend with a 180 – only for the Deeping maestro to battle back for the win.

Looking to spice things up for the finale, MC Tilley changed the format for Adams’ singles clash against Mark Horspool as both players were asked to throw the darts ‘backwards flight’ first.

Amazingly, both players were scoring ton plus shots and Adams left 25, went double six, single one then hit the wire on double six.

Not to be outdone, Horspool checked out on 13 double top for a 53 checkout.

Every player of the night was presented with medals to commemorate the evening, before the two professionals signed the back of the dart board – which was later auctioned for £100.

Organiser Tilley said: “I would like to thank all of the sponsors – Turner’s Fish and Chip Shop Spalding, Foster’s Refrigeration King’s Lynn, Chandler’s Oil and Gas Spalding, Nigel Morris Builders Holbeach, Maples Solicitors Spalding, David Bowman Spalding, Whittaker’s Body Car and Repairs Spalding, Greene King Brewery and John Smith’s Brewery.

“Many thanks for those who provided raffle prizes and personal donations too. Also thanks go to Spalding Services Fishing Club.

“Without everybody’s support I could not have raised this fantastic amount.

“When I first started planning this event back in January I said that if I raised four figures it would be a great achievement.

“But this has excelled and went way beyond that figure.

“I hope everybody enjoyed the evening, which raised money for a good cause.”
