AIDEN Johnson narrowly missed out on a gold medal at the annual schoolboy regional championships in Scunthorpe.
The South Holland Boxing Academy starlet was beaten in the final at Redbourne Sports and Social Club, losing on points to worthy winner B Daws from Phoenix club in Nottingham.
Johnson was in fine form throughout the competition and the coaching team were confident in his ability to reach the latter stages.
But Daws was a different class to the Holbeach club’s warrior and, despite Johnson’s courage and grit, the Phoenix pugilist was far too skilful in every department.
South Holland head coach John Sutton said: “Aiden is a true competitor and we are extremely proud of him.
“He has trained through the Christmas holidays for this competition and to achieve a silver medal is more than he realistically hoped for.
“Credit must be given to his commitment and dedication, but although we are going back to Holbeach with a silver medal, we are already making plans to progress him to next years finals.”
Johnson will be in competition again in the next few weeks and will be performing in front of a home crowd when he fights in South Holland’s own show on March 12.
Sutton added: “This is a great start to the second half of the season.
“We have a current crop of lads and lasses in the gym that we hope can emulate Aiden’s success.
“It is very exciting and I think that the late Mr John King would be very proud of what we are achieving.”
The club – which is home to pro boxer Callum Johnson – is open Monday to Thursday. Juniors can train from 6-7pm, while those aged nine and above can compete from 7pm-9pm. Seniors may also visit on Friday evening, when the club is open from 6pm-7.30pm.
