BOWLS: National glory for Spalding’s Spencer

Have your say

SPALDING bowls ace Martin Spencer has won the under-25 national singles championship.

Spencer secured the coveted accolade at Worthing over the weekend, beating reigning champion Jamie Walker 21-20 in a thrilling final.

The victory also earns him the honour of representing England in the British Isles tournament in Northern Ireland next year.

Spencer qualified as Lincolnshire champion with fellow county colleague Alex Tomlin from Boston.

But as Tomlin lost in his first round match, the Spalding bowler breezed through to the quarter finals with apparent ease.

In the quarter finals Spencer beat Huntingdonshire man Ean Morton in a closely-fought and superbly contested clash.

Not done there, the Lincolnshire lad beat the first of the Northamptonshire representatives 21-16 in the semi-final.

That set up a final duel with England international Jamie Walker, who was also bowling for Northants.

Again, the standard of the match was of a very high calibre, with very little in it either way right to the death, before Spencer took the spoils.

The pair will be colleagues at the beginning of September, when they represent England in the international series to be played in Scotland this year.

Spencer would like to thank his employers Rothornes Solicitors in Spalding, who were very supporting.
