SOMETHING had to give in the Spalding and District League last week as two unblemished records went head-to-head – and it was Pyramid B that streaked clear at the summit.
Holbeach B and the Bourne side both boasted three wins out of three before the clash, but it was anything but a close contest.
Maurice Phillipson (R90), who made a 28 break, and Martin O’Connor (R40) made light work of the opening two frames, before Darrel Read (R50) was awarded a walkover win over Stuart Chamberlain (R20) to seal a 7-0 whitewash.
The victory opens up an eight-point lead for last season’s runners-up, who seem determined to go one better this time around.
That result allowed Consti C to jump up to second after they secured a 7-0 win of their own at Gosberton A.
Pat Bowman (R110), Mick Peet (R110) and the appropriately named John Batterham (R110) were all on winning form.
Also 7-0 winners were third-placed Consti B. Mick Johnson (O170) inspired the defeat of Donington with breaks of 43, 41 and 35, while team-mate John Keeton (R50) added 21. Jim Thompson (R30) did hit a 30 break in vain for the Dons.
Just behind them in fourth – and with a game in hand on the top trio – are BSC.
They took five points from a home clash against Crowland A, despite breaks of 25 and 22 from Derek Tinkler (O30).
Joe Garland (R80) and Mark Wilkinson were the match winners for BSC, while Crowland’s Neil Burton (R90) pegged a frame back to ensure the score ended at 5-2 in favour of the hosts.
Elsewhere, Pyramid A won a cracking contest at Holbeach C 5-2 to secure a second success of the campaign.
Brian Kendall (R50) and John Twell (R70) picked up the vitals wins, but Hugh Pinner (O170) stole the show with a superb individual display.
He amassed scores of 41, 35, 29, 28, 22, 20 (twice) and an unbeaten 35 to defeat Eric Wyer (R30) – who made a 27 break of his own – and secure two points for his side.
