Stuart Cunnington struck four times to guide Spalding to victory in their first home game of the season.

Man of the match Joe Higgins (2), Josh Rowbottom and new signing Dan Needham were also on target in the 8-1 victory over Felixstowe.

Felixstowe took the lead with a breakaway goal which was well taken by the unmarked forward sliding in at the penalty spot.

A good passing move

resulted in Cunnington’s shot which was initially well saved. Cunnington chased the loose ball down and smashed home from an awkward angle to tie the game.

A fast attacking move was well finished by Higgins who showed his strength to out-muscle a defender.

A few moments later Higgins scored again, this time beating two defenders inside the circle and coolly flicking home.

Cunnington completed his hat-trick with two well-worked short corners to make the score 5-1 at half-time.

Spalding went in search of more goals which came from an impressive short corner from Needham who flicked the ball in off the post.

This was followed by another from Cunnington and just five minutes later Spalding scored again.

Needham flicked the ball and the keeper saved well but Rowbottom beat the defenders to the loose ball and found the empty net.

Meanwhile, Spalding ladies first team went to Wisbech without four of their regulars and suffered a 5-0 defeat.

Donna Chester-O’Neill pulled off some amazing saves to keep the tally down and lift the spirits. However, an early goal was followed by four efforts in the second half.

Meanwhile, Long Sutton 2nd continued their fine winning streak in a nine-goal thriller against a strong City of Peterborough fifth side.

The game started at a fast pace and it was no surprise when Gary Hales converted coolly from the middle of the D on three minutes.

However, Peterborough were persistent and scored not only the equaliser but then went searching and found another goal to take them into the lead.

Sutton fought back and got on level terms again through Hales.

Peterborough pressed again and grabbed a third before conceding a penalty stroke just before half-time.

Hales stepped up and calmly beat the keeper to complete his hat-trick and take the teams into the break level.

The end-to-end action continued and Peterborough grabbed a fourth goal early in the second period.

Man of the match Sam Gray then won the ball in midfield before sending the ball to Luke Jackson who sharply played a pass to Hales.

He turned one defender before rocking back and letting fly with a shot which flew into the top corner.

Sutton pressed to find a winner which duly came five minutes from full-time when Hales found Jackson who calmly slotted it under the goalkeeper to make it 5-4.
