ROGER Smith made a storming start to the new Holbeach and District Angling Club season on Sunday.

He came out on top in the individual stakes with a net of 11lbs 05oz at Bell’s Bridge – which also led his team to glory in the Coronation Shield.

Smith was boosted by a bream that weighed in close to 4lbs, while a good eel and some roach made up his hefty net.

Second spot went to Ken Clark on peg nine. He caught a bag of small roach for 3lbs 07ozs.

Last season’s defending champion Jonathan Stubley made a solid start to the defence of his crown in third spot. Also a member of Smith’s overall winning team, he placed third with 2lbs 12ozs.

Completing the winning team, along with Smith and Stubley, were D Wright and J Ivatt.

This Sunday is the Farrow Cup at Sharpe’s Bridge. Draw is 7.15am.
