MATCH VERDICT AND PHOTO GALLERY: Same again for double winners

The season ended as it started for Holbeach United with defeat in Northamptonshire.

The Tigers were beaten at Daventry Town on the opening day of the Future Lions United Counties League campaign.

The scoreline was repeated in the KitmanUK Knockout Cup final at Raunds Town’s Kiln Park this afternoon.

Kieran Fitzgerald - who scored in both of Daventry’s league wins over Holbeach this season - headed home from close range.

Josh Ford scores from the penalty spot.

But the Tigers hit back as Josh Ford converted from the spot following a foul on Will Bird.

Just before the break, Ford cleared off the line at the other end - only for Adam Confue to knock the ball in for Daventry’s second goal of the afternoon.

Substitute Adam Creaney’s penalty ended any hopes of Holbeach forcing a shoot-out when he made it 3-1.

Ford and Adam Jackson were the only players in the Tigers’ squad who also lost the 2016 Knockout Cup final, on penalties to Peterborough Sports.

Substitute Luke Avis was denied by keeper Lustin Cerga in a rare attack for the Tigers, who kept battling away until Creaney’s penalty sealed the league and cup double for Daventry.

The Premier Division champions - who finished 25 points in front of fifth-placed Holbeach - had been beaten 6-2 in the semi-final at Deeping Rangers.

However, the Clarets were thrown out of the competition after bringing on Tyler Walker as a late substitute when he was cup-tied.
