MATCH VERDICT AND PHOTO GALLERY: Derby delight for Deeping Rangers

Dan Schiavi's free-kick secured second spot for Deeping Rangers.

The Clarets required a response to the bitter disappointment of last weekend's fifth-round exit from the Buildbase FA Vase at Willand Rovers.

They duly delivered by recording an eighth successive league win.

The derby victory over Sleaford Town at the Haydon Whitham Stadium on Tuesday night lifted Deeping above pre-season title favourites Rugby Town.

They have closed the gap on leaders Daventry Town to set up the prospect of a genuine challenge for the title.

Rangers got off to the perfect start by creating a series of chances even before Scott Mooney's opener on five minutes.

Henry Dunn, Dan Jarvis, Cameron Johnson and Luke Hunnings had all gone close before Mooney's deflected drive found the bottom corner of the net.

Sleaford keeper Chris Adams denied Mooney and Jarvis when it appeared just a matter of time until Deeping extended the advantage.

However, they were caught out when the offside trap failed and Greens skipper Michael Hayden coolly slotted past Lewis Elsom from Ben Machin's perfect pass.

George Couzens came close to putting the visitors in front while Charlie Coulson and Johnson missed the target at the other end.

Schiavi's 25-yard set-piece crept inside the near post eight minutes before the break, then Deeping kept a grip on the game.

Mooney's overhead kick was cleared off the line and another Schaivi free-kick flew over but the second period was generally much quieter.

Elsom was only called into action to cut out a right-wing cross as Rangers retained control without being able to create more opportunities.

Coulson and Henry Dunn played key roles in central midfield to provide protection in front of the back four.

They kept it simple by knocking the ball around and Sleaford simply couldn't find a way through.
