Pinchbeck dig deep to hold Peterborough Northern Star and get off the mark

Pinchbeck United collected their first Uhlsport United Counties League Premier Division point of the season after coming from behind to share the points with Peterborough Northern Star at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field.

In a game full of incident and opportunity, referee Adam Brierley-Lewis got his yellow card out with less than two minutes played when Star's Marcio Martins hand-balled a Zac Balde cross inside the Knights' penalty box.

At the other end, new striker Tom Siemienczuk should have done better for the home side when he volleyed over the bar from a cross by Kye Daws.

But 13 proved unlucky for Pinchbeck, who had caretaker manager Tom Crozier in the dugout alongside first team coach Alfie Tate, when Balde latched onto a crossfield ball when unmarked and fired low past an exposed Ben Martin.

Pinchbeck faced a wave of pressure as ex-Knights striker Sam Bayly, Kyrie Foster and Balde all had chances to extend the visitors' lead.

But the Knights should have equalised eight minutes before the break when the outstanding Finlay Armond found Siemienczuk with a long-range pass, only for the eventual goal scorer to put his shot over the bar from 18 yards out.

In the second half, chances swayed back and forth as Bayly threatened to carve the Pinchbeck defence open before Patrik Kacirek did similarly in attack before shooting just wide.

But carelessness in possession nearly undid Crozier and Tate's side again as Foster picked up a loose past and fired across Martin's goal.

Balde nearly made it 2-0 to Star when a counter-attack after a Pinchbeck free kick saw him set up by Martins, only for the visitors' goal scorer to shoot straight at Knights' keeper Martin.

Then came the best save of the night when a Star corner by Jamie Graham was headed towards the top corner by Burgess, only for Martin to somehow claw it away and behind for a corner.

But just when it looked like Pinchbeck had spurned their chances to equalise, a foul on Armond inside the Star box saw the referee point to the penalty spot and Siemienczuk sent the Star keeper the wrong way.

Unbelievably, either side could have snatched all three points at the end, firstly when Kye Daws missed a virtual open goal after the ball broke loose in the Star box and then when the visitors hit the post at the end of a flowing move.
