A cracking strike from Liam Marshall sent Spalding United into the next round of this season's FA Cup after a 2-1 victory over Deeping Rangers on Saturday.

Marshall fired a super shot into the top corner of the Clarets' net with 13 minutes remaining of the extra preliminary round tie at the Sir Halley Stewart ground.

Dylan Edge had earlier given the Tulips the lead in a first half where they spurned a number of decent opportunities.

That kept Deeping in the contest and a dogged display from the United Counties League Premier Division North side saw them level in the second half through Luke Steele's penalty.

However, Marshall's sweet strike secured Spalding's progress and a home tie with league rivals and near neighbours Stamford in the preliminary round on Saturday, August 20.

The Tulips had handed debuts to new signings James Clifton, Toby Hilliard and Jordan O'Brien while goalkeeper Dan George, Danny Draper, Brad Rolt, Matt Sparrow and Elliot Sandy were on the substitutes' bench with Josh Moreman and Ben Seymour-Shove sidelined due to injury.

Spalding had run out 5-0 winners in the pre-season friendly between the two sides last month after a second half goal spree.

And they created enough chances in the opening 20 minutes of the cup clash to have repeated that feat.

Toby Hilliard had their first opportunity inside the first couple of minutes as he broke clear but his tame shot was easily gathered by Dan Swan in the Deeping goal.

Jordan O'Brien then had a decent opening but shot straight at Swan before Hilliard took possession in the Deeping penalty area, rounded Swan but shot into the side-netting from a tight angle.

Deeping continued to put their bodies on the line to keep Spalding at bay as Jack Bloodworth and Ross Watson both made vital blocks to deny Edge and O'Brien while Dan Flack made a couple crucial covering challenges to prevent the Tulips from breaking clear.

The deadlock was finally broken just past the midway mark in the first half as Hilliard again found space in the Deeping box only to be denied by a fine double block from Swan, however, this time Edge was on hand to stroke home the second rebound.

Deeping had forced several setpieces during the first half and Watson had a chance at the back post which was blocked by Michael Duggan in the home goal while Ta'i Williams clipped a shot narrowly over the crossbar as the Tulips held their lead at the break.

Spalding skipper Nathan Stainfield went close with a back post header at the start of the second period before the Tulips' lack of a ruthless streak in front of goal came back to haunt them.

Deeping had started to grow in confidence and belief and, when Williams' low cross found Steele, he was sent tumbling by home goalkeeper Duggan.

Steele then stepped up to confidently send Duggan the wrong way from the spot kick to bring the Clarets level.

Rangers had now had their tails up and Spencer Tinkler glanced a header over as Spalding started to become frustrated.

However, they managed to regain the lead with 13 minutes remaining as Deeping struggled to clear their lines after a Brad Rolt shot had been blocked and the ball came out to Marshall who rifled home an excellent finish into the top corner of the Deeping net.

The Clarets pushed men forward in the latter stages in a bid to earn a replay but Spalding stood strong to make a winning start to their competitive campaign.
