JUNIOR RUGBY: Rampant Spalding get new season off to a flier

Have your say

SPALDING RFC U/14s 51 WYMONDHAM U/14s 0: SPALDING got their season off to a cracking start with an excellent team performance.

Town were quick out of the blocks and soon went ahead when the three-quarters presented John McManus with the opportunity to score the opening try of the campaign.

Harry Wilkinson-Roberts, who had an outstanding game, then made a surging run into the Wymondham half. He received good support from his second row partner Luke Jones, who passed on to Corey Lewis to score near the posts.

Now playing with supreme confidence, Spalding pressed on with their attacking play and eventually James Sharpe was able to finish of a move, which was converted by Oliver Johnson.

Captain Alex Worth then started a move from the base of a scrum on the Spalding 22. He passed on to Johnson, who made good ground down the right wing before releasing to Mark Hendy to score under the posts. Johnson converted.

After the break, Spalding were soon back on the attack, with second row Elliot Kulliside the next to charge over.

The next score came from a Wymondham attack. They were penalised on the Spalding 22, with the resulting tap penalty setting Jones set off on a fine run.

He outflanked the defence before setting Lewis free to continue the move and set up a position deep into the opposition 22 – from which he then scored another unconverted try.

Excellent harrying work by Tom Birdseye then saw him gain possession and release Hendy for another unconverted try.

Not done there, Hendy gathered the ball from the re-start and raced forward, before passing to James Hook who scored under the posts.

Johnson’s successful conversion completed the Spalding scoring.
