SPALDING Grammar School are toasting a double after two of their teams progressed to the next round of their respective Daily Mail Schools Cup competitions.

The under-15s knocked out a well-drilled Stamford School 38-29, while the under-18s defeated Bourne Grammar 26-15.

Spalding’s U/15s took the lead early on thanks to a fantastic solo effort from Matthew Pearson and James Mcgowen, but Stamford came back strongly and led 17-12 at the break.

But Spalding came out for the second half in determined fashion and Alfie Butler powered his way over early on, before Casey Lewis showed his pace and strength on two separate occasions with a pair of well-taken tries.

Kyle Robin Wilkins also went over the line to ensure Spalding survived a late Stamford comeback.

Priory Ruskin await in the next round (round three) of the competition.

Meanwhile, the U/18s also made a rapid start as Ben Edwards ran in his first senior try.

Bourne converted one of a number of penalties awarded to them to make it 7-3, but Tom Taylor put Spalding further ahead with the second try of the game.

He cut a line straight through the centre of Bourne’s defence to score in spectacular fashion, only for a try in the corner to make it 14-10 at the interval.

A phase of good handling and offloading out of tackles in the centres then allowed Taylor to score his second try in the second period, bringing the score to 19-10.

After having a man sin binned Bourne pulled another try back, but Ciaran Constable’s interception, break and pass allowed Harry Lott to go over and seal the win, with Kiran Bhondi kicking the conversion.

Callum Ross captained the side well, while Lott, Bhondi, Taylor and Cameron Lithgow were superb.

Spalding host Gresham at the Memorial Field tomorrow (Tuesday, Oct 11) in the next round (3.15pm).
