Spalding Cycling Club stage the opening round of their five-mile time trial league

Josh Wallis stormed to victory in the opening round of Spalding Cycling Club's five-mile time trial league.

Wallis recorded the fastest time of 10mins 09secs in the club's first competitive outing of the new campaign.

They were forced to shorten the course to 4.5 miles due to Covid restrictions but Wallis managed to finish 11 seconds clear of Neil Palmer in second spot.

Runner-up Palmer edged out Team OnForm rider Bryn Richards who took third place after returning a time of 10.37.

Frazer Wallis, representing the host club, was fourth in 11.04 ahead of Spalding team-mate Andy Bowser who finished fifth in 11.11.

There were a total of 24 riders competing in the event which saw a cold start to the season with an avenge temperature of two degrees and a wind chill of minus four.

The best three results from the four rounds of the five-mile league will count towards the final honours. The second round takes place tonight (Tuesday).

Riders had gone into the league opener after helping Spalding take the overall team prize at the King's Lynn CC 25-mile open time trial near Downham Market.

They recorded a combined team time 2.53.30 with Josh Wallis taking third place overall with a time of 53.17.

Neil Palmer finished in 58.04, Frazer Wallis 1.02.09, Simon Wright 1.07.20 and Elliot Stones 1.10.03.
