Gosberton race ace Abbi has podium in her sights

Multiple British karting champion Abbi Pulling (17) has made the big step up from the Ginetta GT5 into the world of single seaters.

The Gosberton teenager made her competitive debut in the F4 British Championship at Donington Park, racing on the British Touring Car Championship programme.

With a good off season testing schedule completed, Friday saw the first free practice sessions of the year, with Abbi working on car set up for the weekend.

Qualifying on Saturday was the all-important shoot out for grid positions, with Abbi recording an outstanding sixth fastest time. She went into race one full of confidence and with a tremendous start was soon with the lead pack and looking to move forward.

An unfortunate incident in the chicane, however, damaged the front wing of the car, meaning an unscheduled pit stop and no points towards the championship.

This result put Abbi at the back of the gridfor race two, but she showed her mettle by battling through with a stunning drive to finish sixth with podium level race pace, boding well for the televised race three.

With confidence high for a podium challenge, the televised final race was short lived, as a collision in the chicane caused damage to the car and meant she was unable to finish.

Abbi said: "I’m really frustrated now, knowing we had the pace and the race craft to compete at the front in all the races. My team put a race winning car out for me, so we are all very disappointed.
"However, with the very tight calendar we have this season, I now know I can win races. This coming weekend we race on the iconic Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit and we are ready for the battle."

British Women Racing Drivers Club chair Lorraine Gathercole told the Guardian: "I followed Abbi's progress at the weekend and was very impressed with her pace, and also her driving performance, particularly in Race 2.

"I am looking forward to another great performance from Abbi next weekend at Brands Hatch."
