Spalding Hockey Club beaten by late strike

Stuart Cunnington’s hat-trick was not enough for Spalding men’s first team in a seven-goal thriller with Letchworth at Glen Park.

The home side scored first with a reverse stick strike during a penalty corner routine.

Another goal came from a nicely-worked counter-attack as this time Cunnington beat the keeper with a neat push pass into the goal.

However, the momentum was soon snuffed out as Letchworth pulled one back then two penalty strokes were awarded in quick succession.

Spalding were given a penalty corner, allowing Cunnington to complete his treble.

In the final 10 minutes, Letchworth broke away through the centre of the pitch and converted their fourth goal.

A first-half goal from player of the match Maddie Haunch was cancelled out as Spalding’s ladies drew 1-1 with Cambridge University 3rd.

Chances fell to Evie Maltby and Ellie Holland before a penalty corner squeezed under the defender’s stick on the line to produce the students’ leveller.

Hennie Boekestyn, Mia Dewing and Hannah Baker found the net for Spalding under-16 girls to beat Kettering 3-0.

Oli Dring (2) and Adolfo Chantre scored for the under-14 boys as this season’s England Hockey Championship matches kicked off with a 3-2 victory over Lindum.

Long Sutton ladies first team shared four goals with second-placed Bury St Edmunds 2nd after an early double from Connie Gittins.

After three successive wins, they made a fast-paced start and it took only eight minutes for the superiority to produce results.

A quick free hit was driven by captain Jo Bland, who found Amber Jones marked heavily in the D.

She immediately offloaded to Gittins, who slotted past the experienced and sharp keeper.

Seven minutes later, a ball won in the centre of the park was threaded through to Amber Jones, who laid off to Gittins again.

This time, with work to do, she lifted the ball past the remaining defender before calmly giving the keeper no chance for her second goal.

A goalmouth scramble was only stopped by the foot of Tania White, resulting in a penalty flick beyond the reach of Lorraine Wallis.

The equaliser was probably always going to come and, midway through the half, a good move was finished off.

Meanwhile, the men’s first team lost 3-1 at Dereham 2nd in the bottom-of-the-table clash.

Josh Baker converted a short corner to level the score before half-time.
