HOCKEY: Away defeats for Spalding
Spalding conceded three late goals in Saturday's 6-2 defeat at Shefford & Sandy.
Stu Cunnington's double was not enough to earn another away win using the new formation which worked well in the previous match.
Against the run of play, Shefford & Sandy scored on the counter-attack with their first real attempt.
They continued to test in-form goalkeeper Nathan Davy and it wasn’t long before the home team doubled the lead.
Spalding's young guns of Jacob Baker, Max Bland and George Halgarth led the replay and, from a short corner, Cunnington smashed the ball into the bottom right corner.
Shefford & Sandy scored early in the second half but Baker, Steve Rogers and Cunnington all had chances until Spalding scored again from a short corner.
The visitors pushed hard to level the scores but the larger Shefford squad managed their substitutes well and dominated the last 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, the ladies first team lost 4-1 at Alford.
Caroline Chester-O’Neill converted the only opportunity but it was too little, too late.
