Andy Prior takes the honours in fourth round of the Frostbite Series at Welland Yacht Club
Handicaps played their part in the final results of Welland Yacht Club’s fourth round of the Frostbite Series on Sunday.
With a variety of boat class taking part, Andy Prior was the eventual winner ahead of Mark Scourfield and Gail Follington.
Although not as cold as the previous Sunday, the forecast was still for strong winds as 12 boats took to the start line.
The wind shifted as the start approached making for a slight running start meaning that most of the boats hung back to time a fast run at the line.
Andy Agar (OK) got the timing spot on and took the early lead from Richard Stedman (Laser 4.7) and then came Geri van Haren (Phantom), Alan Cox and crew Mark Holland (RS200), Mark Scourfield (Solo), Andy Prior and Richard Holland both Laser Radial, Helen Boyd and Ian Thompson both in Solos, Alistair Mitchell (Laser Radial), Gail Follington (Comet) and Eric Murray (Mirror).
As they made their way up river to the first mark (buoy three), van Haren took full advantage of the gusts to power his way to the front followed by Scourfield and then Prior to leave Agar in fourth with Cox-Holland fifth and Mitchell sixth.
The remainder of the fleet would exchange relative positions during the gusts.
Once back around buoy one at the clubhouse on the second of three laps, Prior gained second place from Scourfield in third and Cox-Holland managed to get up to fourth during the run back up to buoy three.
Van Haren would cross the line first with Prior three-and-a-half minutes later with Scourfield 20 seconds later and Cox-Holland a minute-and-a-half after that before Mitchell, Agar, Follington, Thompson, R Holland, Stedman, Boyd and Murray followed until the handicaps were applied.
Final results: 1 Andy Prior, 2 Mark Scourfield, 3 Gail Follington, 4 Geri van Haren, 5 Alistair Mitchell, 6 Andy Agar, 7 Alan Cox & Mark Holland, 8 Eric Murray, 9 Ian Thompson, 10 Richard Holland, 11 Richard Stedman, 12 Helen Boyd.
With three races left and the best four results to count, Scourfield currently leads the series from Gail Follington.
