Eleven boats took to the start of the final race series of the season for Welland Yacht Club on Sunday.

The Frostbite series culminates in the final race on Boxing Day and Sunday’s event saw relatively light winds.

A course was set down river to buoy one and then up river to three for three laps.

The RS200 of Alan Cox and crew Mark Holland got the early lead from the start and made it first around the windward mark.

They were followed by Mark Scourfield (Solo), Gerri van Haren (Phantom), Richard Stedman (Laser Radial), Helen Boyd (Solo), Gail Follington (Comet), Richard Holland (Laser), Katie Follington (Laser Radial), Ben Parsons (Laser), Nick Bonsor (Solo) and Alister Mitchell (Laser).

As they started the run up river towards the top mark, it was still Cox-Holland out in front with Scourfield and van Haren fighting for second place.

Further back Mitchell was starting to pick his way through the fleet, while Bonsor would end up retiring with rig setting issues.

Disaster then struck at the front when Cox-Holland found themselves in the water after an error in balancing the boat which would push them down to eighth place.

With a few more places changing hands on the upwind beat to start the second lap, van Haren now found himself in the lead with Scourfield trying to hang on within handicap distance.

The wind had picked up slightly, and during the upwind section to start the third and final lap a few were finding it hard to keep their boats upright.

With Cox-Holland again finding themselves in the water, van Haren would make it first across the line from Scourfield and then Mitchell with Gail Follington fourth and looking close enough to cause an upset once the handicaps were applied.

Richard Holland was fifth, Stedman sixth, Cox-Holland seventh, Parsons eighth, Katie Follington ninth and Boyd tenth.

With handicaps applied, Scourfield took the win from Gail Follington second and Mitchell third with van Haren fourth.
