GOLF: Spalding hope for league double




Spalding Golf Club’s 1st and 2nd teams are on the brink of each winning their league titles.

Both teams completed their league fixtures on Saturday with wins. The 1st team have secured the Scratch Team 1st Division title, while the 2nd team are waiting on one result from elsewhere before they know if they’re champions of the Handicap Team 1st Division.

Blankney need to beat Belton Park 6-0 to go level with Spalding 2nd on points and win the title on matches won.

Sue Matthews won Spalding Ladies’ Greta David competition, sponsored by Miss Designer Golf.

Of the 21 entrants last Wednesday, the early starters had the better weather and not all ladies played the full 18 holes due to heavy rain. The scores overall were low which meant the competition scratch went out to 77.

Matthews won with 39 points, ahead of Elisha Camm (35) and Rosamund Barnett (32). Both Matthews and Camms knocked a shot off their handicaps.

Twenty ladies entered for the re-scheduled Coronation Cup, which had been postponed in June due to heavy rain. Winner of the Stableford competition was Amanda Camm (35 points), ahead of Sue Dewar on countback from Jenny Van Gemeren (both 33).

Spalding B team drew their final match of the season, against Woodhall Spa.

It was very tight, with both teams needing a win, but the result was fair.

Spalding – Sarah Gibson and Ruth Atkins lost 2&1, Sue Dewar and Jenny Van Gemeren lost 1 down, Lizzie Cooke and Jacquie Walton won 4&3 and Olive Gooderson and Sue Matthews won 1 up.

Lynn Exley was the overall winner ofGedney Hill GC’s Joint Captains’ Day.Almost 60 golfers battled winds at times in excess of 50mph to support their Captains.

Results: Men – 1st Rob Bye 36pts; 2nd Stuart Turnell 35 (ocb); 3rd Pete Orbine 35. Ladies – 1st Lynn Exley 37pts; 2nd Christine Lord 34; 3rd Maggie Bingham 31.

Tydd St Giles GC seniors put on their charity day to support Meadowgate School in Wisbech. More than 100 players took part in a fourball team Stableford event, organised by Roy Pesterfield. The raffle, halfway house and donation from the 2018 men’s captain’s charity made a total of £1,360.
