'There’s no other option than to null and void' football season

There are fresh doubts over south Lincolnshire teams completing their campaigns, with full league seasons now looking impossible after the announcement this week of a third COVID-19 lockdown.

There has been no formal clarification from the Northern Premier League for Spalding United since Monday’s Government announcement.

And the United Counties League, where Holbeach United, Deeping Rangers, Pinchbeck United and Bourne Town ply their trade, is also yet to make a decision.

When will we see football again.
When will we see football again.

But it seems highly unlikely it will be logistically possible, with teams having up to 30 games left and increasingly less time to play them in.

Suggested alternatives are Points Per Game (PPG) or just to null and void the whole season, ashappened last year.

There is also the potential to see whether the seasons could be completed at a 50% mark if it’s possible when the latest lockdown ends.

Spalding chief executive officer Leigh Porter said: “I think it’s a really difficult position that the league are in right now, as the final decision doesn’t come from them.

“It has to be signed off by the national league and rubber stamped by the FA, so it doesn’t come directly from the Northern Premier League.

“What we’ve got to do now is just wait and see what happens.

“If you had to ask me now I would say there’s no other option than to null and void it.

“You can’t really go on Points Per Game (PPG) because of the little games that have been played so far for us this season.

“But I wouldn’t want to be in the league’s shoes currently, because it’s a difficult decision whichever way they decide to go.”

On top of this, there has been no formal clarification from the United Counties League for Holbeach United, Pinchbeck United, Deeping Rangers or Bourne Town, much to the same reason as the Northern Premier League.

Pinchbeck manager Lewis Thorogood said: “The league doesn’t want to null and void at all, and would rather have a final result rather than what happened last year.

“We understand there’s a long way to go before any final decision can be made by the league, but it’s going to be a difficult time for all of us.

“I don’t think they can do PPG as it then becomes very messy for all involved, I think the only option they’ve got is to null and void it.

“But, as I understand it there is a particular desire to complete the leagues in some form.”
