“Every single player should be totally embarrassed of themselves.”
That was Spalding United boss Pat Rayment’s verdict after the 4-0 pre-season defeat at Deeping Rangers on Saturday.
He said: “If they want to do a round trip of 150 miles from wherever they live to just have a jog around, they won’t be doing it too often.
“We knew it was a hot day so maybe some of them could only manage 45 or 60 minutes. But they just didn’t do enough.
“If you give the ball away, you’ve got to work hard to win it back. But we gave it away and said ‘there you go, have it’.
“We were so poor. We can’t say ‘it’s only pre-season and it doesn’t matter’ because you always need to work hard.
“This result will make myself and Marcus Ebdon work harder to get it right.”
The weekend defeat came after Thursday’s victory at Yaxley where Andrew Tidswell scored all three goals.
Spalding are back in action at the Sir Halley Stewart Field tonight when they take on Elite Sports Academy.
Meanwhile, midfielder Lewis Webb has been named player-coach.
Rayment said: “He’s a very strong and bubbly character. I think the added responsibility will benefit him all round.”
