AMBITIOUS Spalding United have snapped up a player who knows just what it takes to win the UCL Premier Division title.
Former St Neots Town skipper Glen Fuff is the Tulips’ seventh summer signing to date, having agreed a deal at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field last week.
Landing veteran central defender Fuff, who lists Rushden and Diamonds, Cambridge City and King’s Lynn among his former teams, is perhaps the best piece of business Andy Stanhope has done so far.
And the Tulips boss reckons that his latest capture is the kind of personality his side need in the dressing room.
Stanhope said: “Glen is a big character and is just what we need at the club.
“It’s great signing for us, he had plenty of other offers but we sold the club to him.
“He’s bought into what we want to build here and I’m delighted with that.
“There’s more to football at this level than money – I know he was offered much more to go elsewhere.”
Having lifted the UCL title with the Saints last season, it was a friendship that goes back 20 years that helped Spalding seal Fuff’s signature.
Now 35-years-old, both Stanhope and Fuff were on the books of Peterborough United as teenagers.
Although the two won’t reunite on the pitch, “Stan” sees great potential in a his possible pairing with club captain Gary Pawson.
Stanhope added: “I know Glen well, we were both YTS at Posh.
“Both he and Pawson won’t be short of things to say at the back, which is perhaps what we have been missing.”
Fuff joins keeper Luke McShane, winger Daniel French, strikers Liam Harrold, Simon Mowbray and Josh Ford, and player/coach Danny Hussey in agreeing a move to Spalding.
But despite the signing spree, Stanhope insists that his side are far from finished in their recruitment drive.
He has told fans to expect more “big announcements” in the coming weeks.
