TIGERS: Warfield red turns game on its head

Have your say

Holbeach Utd 2 S & L Corby 3: A CONTROVERSIAL red card for Matt Warfield turned the game on its head as the Tigers surrendered a two-goal lead at Carter’s Park.

Warfield was dismissed for swearing at the referee while the score was 2-1 to Holbeach – and boss John Chand admits it changed the game.

Chand has no arguments with the red card, but was upset with a lack of consistency from the official, who let Danny Marlow off without even a yellow card for the same offence.

He said: “You can’t condone swearing at the official, but it’s hard to accept a red card when Marlow hasn’t even been booked for saying practically the same thing.

“The defeat is hard to take because our first-half showing would have matched anyone in the league.”

A Mitch Griffiths double had put the Tigers two up, before David Sheridan and Michael Byrne restored parity.

Byrne then whipped in a last-minute free kick which was deflected into his own net by the unlucky Barrett Steward. To make matters worse, Wes Lewis damaged ankle ligaments.

He and Griffiths both miss tomorrow’s home clash with King’s Lynn.

Tigers: Cole, Allen, Newton (Slater), Joof, Baker, Warfield, Steward, Lewis, Orrey (Elston), Mowbray, Griffiths.

Tomorrow (Weds) - Tigers v King’s Lynn (7.45pm); Sat - Cogenhoe v Tigers (3pm).
