TIGERS: Denied point by late Pagnell penalty

Have your say

NEWPORT PAGNELL TOWN 2 (Dykes 46, Lawless pen 84) HOLBEACH UNITED 1 (Kennedy pen 28): JOHN Chand was left to rue a controversial penalty on Saturday as the Tigers crashed at Willen Road.

Luke Kennedy’s spot-kick gave Holbeach a deserved half-time lead, but Daren Dykes’ 46th minute strike restored parity.

Dom Lawless was then able to bury the winner from the spot after Mitch Griffiths was penalised for hand ball.

Chand, who felt Griffiths was fouled in the build up to the winner, reckons a draw would have been fair.

He said: “It was a total game of two halves. They didn’t cross the halfway line in the first half, but battered us in the second.

“I felt a draw was the right result, but the penalty left a bad taste. The linesman had flagged for a foul on Mitch, but the referee ignored him and then gave them a penalty. What can you do?”

The teams went into the clash locked together on 30 points in the top six.

Ash Stevens and Andrew Tidswell both forced smart saves as Holbeach bossed the opening period.

Their dominance finally yielded a goal. Skipper Jamie Stevens was fouled from a Tidswell corner, allowing Kennedy to bury the penalty.

Jack Bridges then denied Ashley Stevens, as Holbeach went in 1-0 up at the interval.

Pagnell made the Tigers rue their profligacy in front of goal pretty quickly, as Dykes levelled from a Lawless cross.

The prolific Dykes smashed an effort off the post on the hour, before Ashley and Jamie Stevens had shots saved late on.

But Pagnell were to have the last word, with Lawless sending his side fourth in the table.
