DEEPING RANGERS 1 COGENHOE UNITED 1: Rangers ended a mixed week in defiant mood as they battled back to earn a deserved draw in their penultimate game of the season on Saturday.
Striker Ryan Oliver was uncharacteristically sent off for two yellow cards in a goalless first period, before talented teenager Jack Bowen fired Cogenhoe ahead just past the hour.
But Ciaran Holt, who netted an equaliser in the reverse fixture between the duo, slammed home from a cross by man-of-the-match David Burton-Jones eight minutes from time.
It was Deeping’s fourth game of the week after losing 1-0 at Yaxley in the last four of the Hinchingbrook Cup on Tuesday and beating hosts Harborough Town 2-1 in the UCL Premier Division on Thursday night.
Ondre Odain fired the only goal at Yaxley to end Tuncay Korkmaz’s hopes of landing a trophy this season.
The visitors did have numerous chances to score, no more so than a penalty miss from Scott Ginty that flew way over the bar.
It was much better from Deeping at Harborough though, as they came from a goal down to secure an impressive win.
Danny Wright (55) headed the hosts into a 1-0 lead, but Oliver set up skipper Burton-Jones to level (71) before Tom James rifled home an angled winner ten minutes from time.
With Huntingdon three points clear of fifth-placed Rangers, they need just a point at S & L Corby tonight to deny Korkmaz’s men a repeat of last year’s top four finish.
But should Corby upset the odds, a victory over Harborough at Outgang Road tonight (7.45pm) in Deeping’s final game of the season will be enough to clinch fourth.
