Rafa Mazzarella can’t wait for the big kick-off on Saturday.

His debut as a first-team manager comes at Abbey Lawn when Bourne Town take on Irchester United in the United Counties League Division One.

Mazzarella took charge of the Wakes this summer after a successful spell with Peterborough Northern Star’s reserve team.

He said: “On a personal note this is definitely a big challenge.

“I learned quickly as the manager of the reserves last season.

“I’m looking forward to the responsibility of looking after the first team as well as working closely with the reserves.

“Hopefully in the first few weeks we can pick up some points and perform well, even when players are unavailable due to holidays and weddings.

“I’m sure we’re in the same situation as everyone else but it’s a bit of a nightmare being without a few players for the first league game.

“A lot of the lads have also come up from the reserves. It’s going to be a big challenge for everyone but we want to play some decent football along the way and get a few wins.”

Bourne completed the pre-season programme with an 8-2 home defeat to Stamford last weekend.

However, Mazzarella said: “We held our own for the first 25 minutes and put a few moves together.

“We are a small side so it’s going to be a challenge for us physically.

“Any mistake we make must be rectified so we don’t do the same again.”
