Spalding United are set to launch their promotion bid with a three-man strikeforce.

Tulips boss Pat Rayment has decided to ditch a traditional 4-4-2 system in favour of more attacking options.

‘Plan A’ for Rayment will be a 4-3-3 formation which he tried in the opening friendly on Saturday when Josh Moreman, Tom Waumsley and Jordan Nuttell led from the front.

Waumsley was on target but Wisbech Town hit back for a 2-1 home victory thanks to Sam Cubberley and Nick Davey.

Rayment admitted: “I doubt that we will ever play 4-4-2 this season.

“I want us to play with three forwards or two with one in support.

“Everybody can play 4-4-2 and that’s our Plan C but we want to have more attacking options.

“Our intention is that the frontline will be a right handful along with the quality in midfield.

“We are going to be a young team but I was really pleased with the way they played on Saturday.

“I had never seen most of the players before and I was happy with the new system.

“We had a good shape as it was the first time they had all played together.

“The first 45 minutes were as good as I’ve seen for a first pre-season game.

“We passed the ball really well at a good tempo and that’s what we want to do.”

The Tulips continue their programme at Oakham United on Tuesday night (7.30pm).
