Spalding United are now UCL Premier Division champions – and that’s official after the only side who could have caught them lost.

Huntingdon Town’s 2-1 defeat at Cogenhoe United on Tuesday means the celebrations can start at Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field.

Pat Rayment’s side have clinched the title with four games left, but the boss now wants 100-plus points to add to the 100-plus goals.

Rayment said: “Huntingdon’s loss made it a happy night on Tuesday.

“But, putting a realistic spin on it, they were never going to overtake our goal difference (57 better than Huntingdon).

“I can’t praise the players enough, but a lot of big thank yous also have to go to the directors and all the other people at the ground.

“This was a two-year plan and we’re on course to score between 250 and 300 goals in the league alone over the two seasons.

“So no one can say we haven’t given people value for money.”

But if Rayment’s side are expecting an easier time of it now, they couldn’t be more wrong with training sessions on Tuesday and Thursday ahead of next weekend’s trip to AFC Rushden and Diamonds.

Rayment is also expecting more hard work from the board as they prepare for life in a higher division.

“The club has to put in place a structure for Spalding United to go forward,” Rayment said.

“We’ve put ourselves on a platform and there needs to be a proper structure to the football club.

“We have aspirations, like a lot of other clubs, and they have to be allowed to happen.”
