Evo-Stik League First Division South: Spalding United 3 Carlton Town 0

Spalding United kicked off 2015 with an eighth successive home win – and it couldn’t have been much easier.

The Tulips reached the midway stage of the season by extending their unbeaten league run.

Andrew Tidswell became the first Spalding player to reach double figures in the Evo-Stik League and he added another in the last minute.

Jamie Thurlbourne made it 2-0 from the penalty spot after Lee Torr was sent off for a professional foul on Tidswell.

That left Carlton Town down to nine men as striker Aaron Hooton was dismissed for a second bookable offence just past the hour mark.

But a lack of discipline was not the only problem for the Millers who failed to record a single effort on goal.

Indeed it was easy to see why they have only collected four points in 10 away games so far this season.

Spalding were always in control and, although it was not pretty to watch, the result was never in any doubt.

Early efforts by Chris Hall and Tom Waumsley were off target but it was no surprise when the Tulips went ahead on 18 minutes.

They combined again as Hall’s pass found Waumsley inside the penalty box with a neat touch to set up a shot on goal. Martin Kearnley made a save but Tidswell tapped into the empty net.

Thurlbourne, Tidswell and Hall threatened to increase the advantage before the break but Spalding continued to create chances.

Lee Clarke – making his full debut – forced another save while Tidswell could have finished with a hat-trick.

Strike partner Waumsley had three attempts in quick succession, including one which Torr cleared off the line.

Hooton was shown a red card to make a comeback even less likely but Spalding’s second goal only came with 11 minutes left after Carlton’s second sending-off.

Torr was dismissed for a professional foul and from the spot Thurlbourne tucked his penalty past Kearnley.

There was still time for Tidswell to see a close-range header parried and he finally made it 3-0 at the end.
