NEWCASTLE BENFIELD 3 (McEvoy 59 & 90, Chilton 65) DEEPING RANGERS 1 (Heron 19): TUNCAY Korkmaz had nothing but praise for his side after their record-breaking FA Vase run came to an end in Newcastle on Saturday.
The Deeping player/boss saw his side lead the fourth round tie for the best part of 40 minutes after Matt Heron’s early opener.
But three goals in the final half hour sank depleted Rangers, who were missing Josh Moreman, Matty Evans, Spencer Tinkler and Chris Logan for the Toon test.
Player/boss Korkmaz said: “To be honest, we just didn’t have the squad to get the job done. In my opinion we have a team that can challenge anyone at this level when we’re at full strength.
“We could have been 2-0 up at half-time and that may have been enough, but once they equalised there was only one team that was going to win.
“Overall we’ve been brilliant in all of the cups this season – and we’ve had no easy draws. It’s a shame the run is over, but the lads can be pleased with what they’ve achieved.”
John McEvoy (2) and Mick Chilton were the scorers for Benfield, as they progressed to join the likes of Wisbech Town and Peterborough Northern Star in the last 32.
Rangers: Doughty, Gilbert, Jackson, Fenton, Julian, Cox (Simpson), Weston, Burton-Jones, Brader (Peel), Heron, Jones.
• Tonight: Deeping v PNS (Hinchingbrooke Cup, 7.45pm); Saturday: Irchester Utd v Deeping (3pm).
