Boss Dave Frecklington was stunned by Spalding United’s poor performance as they crashed out of the Buildbase FA Trophy on Saturday.

He admits Gresley’s 4-1 home win was fully deserved as the Tulips “just didn’t turn up on the day”.

Frecklington said: “They were excellent and really gave us a lesson in terms of the way they play with their attitide, work-rate, commitment and desire.

“Everything was there but we were missing all of those ingredients.

“We looked sluggish and tired with no energy. I was gobsmacked watching that performance.

“Gresley’s front four absolutely ripped us to pieces but I didn’t expect us to ship four goals.

We’ll have two training sessions this week where the players need to understand exactly what we want. We will work them really hard to get ourselves ready for Saturday at home to Leek Town.

“There was nothing about us at all and two or three players went hiding. So it was very disappointing.

“We were missing key players as Neal Spafford is out for six weeks, Matt Varley came off after five minutes and Andy Wright was also injured.

“But there are no excuses. It’s a bad defeat and full credit to Gresley who deserved to win 4-1.

“As much as we always want to win games, at the same time you need to make sure you compete every week.

“Our priority is the league and you have to put Saturday into perspective.

“We’ve lost two cup games and we’re unbeaten in the league so, of course, we would have taken that before the start of the season.

“We’ll have two training sessions this week where the players need to understand exactly what we want. We will work them really hard to get ourselves ready for Saturday at home to Leek Town.

“Hopefully there will be up to three additions in the next couple of days as well.

“We’ve been in talks for a while with players but sometimes these deals are easier said than done.

“They have got to be the right players to bring in. It’s important to give us a lift.”
