Spalding United manager Dave Frecklington feels his patience has been rewarded in rebuilding the squad this summer.
The Tulips should complete their line-up for next month’s big kick-off ahead of the home friendly against Boston Town on Wednesday night.
They are due to bring in three more players following the arrival of attacking midfielder Sam Downey yesterday.
The 22-year-old - who had spells last season at Corby Town and Stamford - was training with North Ferriby United.
Frecklington said: “We are really pleased to get him down here.
“Nathan Whitehead and Matt Varley are aggressive holding midfielders but Sam can mix it up and give teams something else to think about.
The spine of our team is very strong but you need to have Plan B as well. We want more options in the squad to change the formation.Dave Frecklington
“I’ve followed his progress over the last few years since we had him at Worksop Town in pre-season.
“He has played in Sweden’s first division and he was very unfortunate not to get a full-time deal at North Ferriby.
“As soon as we showed an interest in him, he was happy to make the step down and hopefully help us with our promotion challenge.
“He’s looking forward to playing here and making a big impact.

“We have been patient in our build-up which is something I’m not used to doing.
“But I’ve been pleased with our approach and we wanted to get it right.
“We knew players would become available at this stage of pre-season.”
Spalding will also bring in former Boston United goalkeeper Sam Vince who had a key role in Frecklington’s Lincoln United squad at the start of last season.
Frecklington added: “He is a quality keeper who has moved back to the area.
“Michael Duggan is our number one but it’s important to have two keepers pushing each other for the shirt.”
Spalding continue the pre-season programme on Saturday at Yaxley.
