Deeping Rangers’ biggest crowd of the season arrived in anticipation – but most left disappointed after watching a scrappy game.

Fifth-placed Yaxley were first to show as Phil Stebbing pounced on a loose ball and made his way into the home box to see his effort blocked by Dan Flack.

Dan Cotton collected a loose clearance to cross into the box where Flack was on hand again to quell the threat.

Rangers started to threaten as Dan Schiavi’s long-range free-kick took a deflection off a defender into the hands of Ollie Sutton.

Charlie Coulson won the ball from Wayne Morris and advanced into the Cuckoos’ box before shooting weakly at Sutton.

Schiavi’s low free-kick was touched by Coulson into the path of David Burton-Jones who in turn set up Henry Dunn but the shot was straight at Sutton.

The second half was more of the same. Scott Mooney turned his defender to send a pass to free Tom Waumsley down the right. His cross was met at the far post by Coulson whose attempt to find the net off his chest only found the hands of Sutton.

Rob Hughes’ free-kick to the back post was met by Morris, only to find keeper Richard Stainsby as the visitors had a rare sight of the goal.

Rangers were close again as Waumsley delivered a cross to find Coulson but a poor touch saw the ball fall for Sutton.

He was Yaxley’s saviour again when he made a good save as Dunn’s sublime pass slipped through the defence to set up Flack shoot for Sutton to make a fine save.

The unusually quiet Cotton cut in from the left to curl a shot wide of the far post then at the other end Mooney’s neat flick allowed Tom Smith sight of the Yaxley goal but the shot was wide of the post.

A game of little goalmouth action saw the points shared – Rangers now look in a fight with Desborough Town and Eynesbury Rovers for second and third positions.
