Boss Dave Frecklington feels Spalding United’s squad will get the full benefit of their pre-season fitness when the real action kicks off next month.

The Tulips’ first friendly is away to King’s Lynn Town tonight after four training sessions.

A small squad means that players will need to stay on the pitch for more minutes instead of gradually building up to a full game.

Frecklington said: “All the lads look fit and they came back in good condition which was pleasing.

“They have worked really hard in the first few sessions and now we’re looking to get our shape so we’re ready for the first game at King’s Lynn.

“The footballs came out on the first day because we don’t want them running miles.

The lads are ready for it tonight after four really tough sessions in the space of eight days.

“We have done short, sharp work to make sure we are geared up for the first league game on August 13.

“We’re still hoping to add one or two players before the start of the season.

“We’ll wait and see for the right players to become available.

“A lot of our lads will need to get through 90 minutes early on instead of playing 45 or 60.

“I’m sure they will benefit massively on August 13.

“We’ll have an advantage over a lot of other teams who are only giving 45 minutes when our players will get 75 or 90 in every game.

“The lads are ready for it tonight after four really tough sessions in the space of eight days.

“Hopefully they will put in a decent performance to let us know exactly what we’ve got.

“This should be a really good indication of where we need to be and I’m hoping that we don’t need too much more.

“We’ll look to send out our strongest starting line-up and then add some young lads plus one or two trialists.”

Paul Walker faces a check on a slight strain to his quad muscle while player-coach Chris Hamilton is unavailable for tonight’s game.
