DEEPING RANGERS 1 (Moreman 27) THRAPSTON TOWN 0: JOSH Moreman’s debut strike was enough to earn Deeping a winning start to their season.
The ex-Peterborough Northern Star wideman headed home a Mark Jones cross just before the hour at Outgang Road, earning Rangers their first three points of the new UCL Premier Division season.
It was far from a classic – not that Deeping player/boss Tuncay Korkmaz cared.
He said: “We’ve got a brand new team and it’ll take time to settle. The lads were a bit nervous I think, but it was important that there was no hiccup from us. I’d say we probably just edged it.”
Playing an attacking 4-3-3 formation, Rangers carried the greater threat throughout the contest. Promoted Thrapston hit the woodwork early on, but Moreman’s back-post header settled their nerves.
Debutant keeper James Doughty was called into action just after the break, but the hosts continued to call the tune.
Tony Battersby – who looked a class act – was unfortunate to see an acrobatic second ruled out for offside, while Kev Gilbert saw a long-range lob ripple the side netting.
Rangers, who face Spalding next, were full value for their win.
Deeping: Doughty, Evans, Jackson, Tinkler, Julian, Weston (c), M Jones (Gilbert 75), Burton-Jones, Battersby (Oliver 81), Cox (Heron 46), Moreman. Not used: Fenton.
