Tommy Treacher’s deflected drive proved enough for three points as Holbeach United made a winning start to the league campaign.

The Tigers - who beat Swaffham Town 4-1 in the Emirates FA Cup last weekend - edged out Yaxley who were left frustrated by the away team’s tactical plans at In2itive Park.

Playing Stuart Eason as a lone striker, Holbeach won it on the counter-attack when Treacher tried his luck from 20 yards and saw the ball loop past keeper Aaron Butcher after 32 minutes.

The Cuckoos couldn’t break through to create clear-cut chances but skipper Dan Cotton hit the base of the post in the second half.

Meanwhile, Bourne Town were denied by a late leveller after twice taking the lead at home to Whittlesey Athletic.

The Wakes went in front through Zak Munton on 13 minutes and thought they had won it with four minutes to go when Aaron Jesson struck.

But Jimmy McDonnell’s side had to settle for their first point rather than an opening win.
