Striker Lee Dube found out about one of the oldest cliches in cup football – “the pitch is a leveller” – in guiding Holbeach United to UCL Knockout Cup second-round success over Rothwell Corinthians.
For long spells, Corinthians looked more at home on the muddy pitch but some perseverance from Dube and his team-mates got the job done.
Dube said: “The pitch didn’t make it any easier but we put a lot of pressure on Rothwell for the whole game.
“The ball wasn’t going in until, luckily, Jamie Clarke put the ball in and gave me the header to score.
“Rothwell came out in gear five when we only came out in gear three but as the game progressed, we hit the gears and put our chances away.
“We had about 90 per cent possession and the belief in the team from the momentum we’ve had through the last seven games showed because we didn’t want to lose.
“In the end, we got what we deserved and we’re a good team who are determined to show what we’re about.”
