Lincolnshire FA Junior Cup final - Moulton Harrox 1 Hykeham Town 2 (after extra-time; 90 minutes 0-0)
Runners-up medals and the man-of-the-match award provided little consolation at the end of a big night.
Scoring an extra-time goal and earning plenty of credit for a positive performance were not really the rewards which Moulton Harrox had wanted either.
Ultimately they could not quite celebrate after missing out on a fifth victory in the Lincolnshire FA Junior Cup final.
For the second time, they were beaten at this stage as Hykeham Town took home the trophy on Wednesday.
It was a tight affair which needed an extra 30 minutes and looked to be heading for a penalty shoot-out until Josh Raby nodded the winner and broke Harrox’s hearts.
Moulton probably had the edge in the first half as Macauley Grimwood and Ashley Coddington both had efforts cleared off the line.
However, they remained on level terms thanks to a magnificent double save by Lee Kenealy.
The keeper dived low to his right to push out Hykeham captain Steve Mehta’s penalty on 37 minutes then got up to block the rebound as well.
Kenealy followed that up by gathering the ball inside the six-yard box as the referee awarded a free-kick for a foul.
Just 30 seconds after half-time Kenealy was in action again to brilliantly tip over a shot away from the top corner.
Despite a few moments of panic defensively, Moulton managed to create chances but Ben Allen and Grimwood were off target while Matthew Barnett was also denied.
Moulton missed a golden chance to go ahead just four minutes into extra-time.
Billy King’s long throw-in was flicked on to the far post and Ian Bradbury somehow sent a half-volley over the bar from three yards out.
Seven minutes later Matt Easton put Hykeham ahead with a far-post finish from a corner.
Moulton levelled early in the second period as skipper Phil Groves got into the box and the ball broke free for Grimwood to slot in.
But another corner led to Hykeham’s winner with Raby flicking a header into the net via the far post.
Coddington was pushed up front but Harrox couldn’t find another equaliser and Hykeham held on.
Moulton’s reserves take on Baston in the PFA Challenge Cup final at Peterborough Northern Star on Friday night.
