SPALDING United saw off Wellingborough Town 2-1 despite playing for over 50 minutes with ten men on Saturday, while Holbeach United defeated Yaxley 3-2 and Deeping Rangers lost 2-0 to Leek Town in the FA Cup.
Bidding to bounce back from last weekend’s 5-1 loss at Newport Pagnell, the Tulips made the perfect start at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field.
With just ten minutes on the clock, Greg Smith’s sublime cross-field pass picked out Dan French, who rolled the ball through for Liam Hook to slot home.
That’s how it stayed until just before the break, when Hook went from hero to zero after being sent off for a needless head-butt.
Buoyed by their numerical advantage, Wellingborough’s Chris Difante soon levelled matters with a close-range strike six minutes into the second period.
It looked like the Doughboys would go on and wrap up the points, but a dubious penalty allowed Spalding’s leading scorer Smith to bury what proved to be the winner on 68 minutes.
Meanwhile, Holbeach were forced to come from behind against rivals Yaxley at Carter’s Park.
24 hours after their sensational loan approach for Manchester City’s Carlos Tevez, John Chand’s Tigers trailed 1-0 at the break.
They then fell 2-0 down, but strikes from Andrew Tidswell (2) and a Mitch Griffiths winner fired the hosts to a fifth win from eight UCL Premier Division games so far this season.
The news wasn’t so good for Deeping though, as their fine FA Cup run ended at Outgang Road. Evo-Stik League First Division South side Leek handed them a 2-0 reverse in the second qualifying round. Matt Haddrell and Devon Gibson struck the goals.
In the Peterborough Premier Division, Moulton Harrox remain unbeaten after a 0-0 home draw with Deeping Rangers Reserves, while Crowland Town were hammered 6-0 at King’s Cliffe.
