Loan signing for Spalding United as teen defender Betts joins Tulips on loan

Spalding United have moved down the A52 to plug a hole in defence with the signing of Notts County prospect Owen Betts.

The 18-year-old centre half is in his first year as a professional at Meadow Lane, having come through the Magpies youth system where he was a regular at under-18 and under-23 levels.

Betts joins the Tulips, initially on a month-long loan, ahead of Saturday's rearranged home game against Stocksbridge Park Steels against home Matt Easton's side posted one of their most impressive wins of the season.

A Joel Brownhill hat-trick saw Spalding pick up all three points at the South Yorkshire side last month and Easton will be hoping that Betts can help his side achieve a morale-boosting double at Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field on Saturday.

Easton said: "Notts County made a few of their players available, either for loans or permanent deal.

"But because Owen is quite well-thought-of at the club, they loaned him to us for a month, while giving him time to make it into their first team.

"He's a young centre half who is good, quick and strong, so Owen is a welcome addition to our squad.

Betts' loan signing was a much-needed boost for Easton in a week where he found out that the Tulips have gone from the prospect of having only one game in October to facing three games in a row.

Ahead of an eagerly-awaited derby at home to Stamford, Spalding go to Frickley Athletic next Saturday on top of Saturday's rearranged fixture.

Easton said: "We could have done with another couple of weeks off before our next game because we've had a pretty long injury list.

"Neal Spafford and Archie Moyses are both unavailable long term, while Josh Spencer is two weeks' away from being fit again.

"But Charlie Hart, Jenk Acar, Jamie Jackson and Jack Withers are back and available for Saturday."
