FOOTBALL: Holbeach announce six pre-season matches

Holbeach United have an eye-catching line-up of six matches as part of the promise of a tough pre-season.

The highlights come towards the “business end” of the build-up for the Tigers, with Moulton Harrox (Friday, July 19) and Stamford (Tuesday, July 23) the visitors to Carter’s Park.

Harrox will be close to starting their campaign to try and retain the Chromasport Peterborough and District League Premier Division title.

For Stamford – where Tigers manager Danny Hussey had a good spell alongside former Holbeach boss Graham Drury – it will be their fifth match as they take shape ahead of the EvoStik Northern Premier League Division One East campaign.

The uhlsport United Counties League season gets under way on Saturday, August 3 – and Hussey jokes that he hopes the Tigers start with the longest away trip as he is unavailable that day.

As a fitness fanatic, he’s sure to have them in good shape by then and is already impressed by what he has seen online ahead of last night’s first training session.

“With social media, you often get an insight into people’s lives and I’ve seen one or two lads posting stuff,” said Hussey.

“Joe Braithwaite would perhaps be the first to admit he wasn’t at his fittest last season but he’s been saying he’s eating healthier and getting ready and Ricky Drury’s been posting runs and looking after himself.

“The lads should have some basic fitness but they’ll be pushed hard in pre-season because that’s the way I like it and it’s what Dean (Elston) and Phil (Barnes) want for the Reserves.

“I’ll be looking to build them up through 45, 60 and 75-minute spells in games.”

The Tigers have their first pre-season run-out at Peterborough League Premier Division newcomers Parson Drove on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Next up are Skegness Town, managed by former Spalding United boss Chris Rawlinson (home; Saturday, July 6), Blackstones (away; Wednesday, July 10) and last season’s Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties First Division champions Swaffham Town (home; Saturday, July 13).
