FOOTBALL: ‘Only a miracle can stop us now!’

Pinchbeck United player-manager Ian Dunn is “waiting for the inevitable to happen”.

But he wants the Knights to keep their focus and finish off their first-ever season in the ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League as Division One champions.

They are 13 points clear of second-placed Raunds Town with two games in hand.

Pinchbeck only have nine matches to go before the end of April.

Dunn admitted: “Only a miracle can stop us now and we would probably need to lose seven or eight times.

“It’s just a matter of time and that’s a strange scenario which I’ve never been in.

We think it’s going to happen but we have to make sure that we get over the line.

“It almost feels like you want it to be all over now. But we’ve got to keep our focus, otherwise it could fall away.

“We think it’s going to happen but we have to make sure that we get over the line.

“We probably need 16 points as Harrowby United can get closest to us at the moment.

“They have games in hand and we must play them twice – but we’ve got those points on the board.

“Our average is just below two-and-a-half points per game and nobody else has got two points.

“We have the division’s best defensive record because we are very disciplined and compact.

“We are difficult to break down with the way we are set up and the players deserve a lot of credit for taking everything on board.

“We are up there among the top scorers as well so we’re doing the job at both ends of the pitch.”

Ollie Maltby took his tally to 30 goals with the winner at Rushden & Higham United last weekend.

Dunn added: “He’s a proven scorer.

“He got 62 goals last term but at times it was too easy at that level.

“He gets himself in good positions to finish chances.

“But everyone works hard in our team. We look fitter and stronger than most sides – the work-rate is phenomenal.”
