FOOTBALL: Tigers' new signing is the 'Jamma' in the cake

Holbeach United manager Danny Hussey says the return of Jamie Stevens was the one highlight of last Saturday’s pre-season defeat by Skegness Town.

The visitors eased to a 2-0 win with a first-half brace from Will Britton.

Hussey was unhappy with much of what he saw but was delighted to be able to give Stevens a run-out after he missed last season due to personal reasons.

“To get Jamma back on a pitch for 45 minutes and enjoying his football was a massive plus. It was great for his grandad (Bushy), the rest of his family and the supporters alike,” he said. “To have a good, local talent of Jamma’s quality in their side is always going to be a plus for any Holbeach manager.”

However, that’s where the praise stopped. Hussey says his squad seemed sluggish and below par and although this was only the Tigers’ second pre-season match following a 2-1 midweek win at Parson Drove, he was looking for much better from last night’s match at Blackstones (result not known as we went to press).

Speaking yesterday (Wednesday), he said: “I’ll be taking a smaller squad. With the games coming thick and fast, these boys need to more minutes to get fit.

“There was a big difference for us between the Parson Drove and Skegness games. The scoreline at Parson Drove didn’t do us justice with the amount of chances we created.

“Against Skegness we were individually and collectively poor. They didn’t follow instructions and the fitness levels looked poor which really annoyed me because it’s something I personally take seriously and work on and I expect my players to follow suit.”

He added: “It was a kick up the backside for a few . I’m looking to bring in a couple of players to strengthen us. Where our lads might be thinking there’s not a lot of competition, I want to change that.

“If they are not fit and not doing what’s asked of them, they won’t be in the side.”

Starting XI v Skegness: Drury; Wilson, Jackson, Tinkler, Clay; Fairweather, Joe Smith; Lockie, Jack Smith, Bird; Ford.

The Tigers host Swaffham Town on Saturday (3pm) and Moulton Harrox on Friday, July 19.
