Cup disappointment for Tigers
United Counties League cup final
Rothwell Corinthians 1-0 Holbeach United
Holbeach United go into the second lockdown of the year on the hangover of a cup final loss to Rothwell Corinthians.
The Tigers lost a narrow 1-0 with a second half Tom Mills goals for the opposition.
It was a cold and chilly November night, and the game started in typical cup final with both teams struggling to gain any foothold in the game.
Craig Maisiri had the first chance of the night for the Corinthians, as he put the ball into the back of the net, but unfortunately for him the assistant had put his flag up already.
It was then Holbeach's turn to have a big chance of their own, when new-signing, Fraser Bayliss put Joe Smith through one-on-one on goal, but Ash Bodycote stood up to the shot and saved well with his feet.
The game had begun with a frenetic pace to the spectacle, with both teams having chances throughout the game, with two big blocks from Maisiri shots kept the opposition out, and then Luke Wilson also had a chance on the edge of the box as his shot was scuffed wide.
It began to die down after that, until the 35th minute, where Rothwell had a brilliant chance to go into the lead.
Dodzi Agbemu run the length of the pitch down the left, he whipped a ball into the box, and after a couple of deflections it found its way to Maisiri who somehow missed the goal from two yards out, and scooped the ball into Ricky Drury's grateful gloves.
The game then petered out, until the second half where a good Adam Jackson shot on the half-volley was blocked well and behind for a corner, but nothing came from it.
However, it was heartbreak for Tigers when a ball was failed to be cleared on the edge of their own box, into the body of Tom Mills, who ran through on goal, waited for Drury to move and shot the other side of him to put the Corinthians 1-0 ahead.
Despite that, much was the theme of the game for the Tigers, who struggled to create any real chances in the game, but they were given a boost with just seven minutes left of the game, as goalscorer Tom Mills was sent off for an off the ball incident.
It nearly paid off for Holbeach, as Bayliss managed to find his way to the back post, and had a shot that superbly saved by Bodycote, and it was this save that led to Rothwell Corinthians being crowned champions.
There is some glimmer of hope for the Tigers as they are set to be on a mission of revenge when they face up to Rothwell Corinthians again when lockdown is due to end.
