Overseas ace Nabeel Bhayla cracked a sensational century for Spalding Town’s top Sunday side in a big win over Ketton in Rutland League Division Three.
The South African opener helped himself to 128 in Town’s tally of 232-9 in 45 overs, before the bowlers limited the hosts to 163-6 at Pitt Lane.
Having won the toss, Spalding decided to have a bat – and it proved the right call, with Springbok Bhayla anchoring the innings superbly.
He opened up with all-rounder Jim Clarke (19), before sharing mini-partnerships with Ian Wilson (11) and David Thomas (13).
Joe Broomfield, Patrick Harrington and Tim Norris did all go for ducks, but timely knocks from Alex Lyon (12) and Corey Lewis (17 not out) took Spalding past 200 before the close.
Ketton’s reply showcased an unbeaten 106 from Chris Durant, but he had very little help.
Adam Dale (12) and W Bird (19no) did offer some help, but Broomfield (3-35) and Joe Lyon (2-35) starred with the ball to keep a handle on the score.
The win keeps fourth-placed Spalding in with a shout of a top two finish.
