Long Sutton Sunday 1st (99-7) beat Yaxley 1st (96 all out) by 3 wickets: Sutton began their Rutland League Division Three campaign with a hard-fought win against Yaxley on Sunday.

After electing to field first on a bowler friendly wicket, Sutton made early breakthroughs to put the opposition in trouble with Barry Stanway (3-18) and Paul Edgeller (2-16) doing the damage.

Wickets continued to fall with only Adam Paull (35) putting up any resistance.

The innings was wrapped up with wickets from debutant Tom Sanderson (1-32), Ian Morris (2-19) and skipper Jake Burton (2-9) to leave Sutton with a target of only 97 for victory.

The chase started poorly with the early wickets of Phil Coote (0) and Adam Wright (2) falling before Chris Booth (16) and Chris King (18) came together to settle the ship.

However another flurry of wickets left Sutton in trouble at 61-7.

This brought captain Burton (11 not out) and vice captain Edgeller (20 not out) to the crease though – and they batted effectively to see the side home and give Sutton a deserved victory.

• Long Sutton have three scheduled matches this weekend. The 1st team host Heckington (1pm) on Saturday, while on Sunday the 2nd side visit Freiston and the Sunday 2nd side make the trip to S & L Corby (1.30pm).
