CRICKET: Spalding and Bourne 2nds win as South Lincs & Border League title race hots up
Just two points separates Spalding and Bourne 2nds at the top of the South Lincs & Border League premier division after both enjoyed convincing victories on Saturday.
Spalding won at fourth placed Freiston while Bourne enjoyed success at Long Sutton, who are fifth.
Batting first, Spalding posted 195-5 off their 45 overs at Freiston, Jon Manton scoring 53, Joseph Broomfield 36, Josh Newton 78 and Jonathan Miles 10. In reply, Freiston were skittled out for 106 in 38 overs, Julian Wilson taking 4-10 off 7 overs, Jonathan Miles 3-34 off 12, and William Naylor, John Garner and Joseph Broomfield one wicket each.
At Long Sutton, Bourne batted first and amassed a total of 252, Robert Dunn scoring 85, Joshua Bentley 42, Richard Hewitt 15 and Ben Keast 38. For Sutton, Dan Oldfield took 3-57 off 12, Beau Newman 2-42 and there were also wickets for Barry Stanway and Aaron John.
The home team, were bowled out 70 runs short of their target, with 19 balls remaining. Richard Hewitt took 3-47 and for Sutton, Luke Barnes hit 21, Chris Booth 17, Dan Oldfield 17, Phil Barnes 31 and Barry Stanway 32 not out.
Ninth placed Billingborough were defeated at sixth placed Grantham, who batted first and scored 205-2, Stuart Gollop and Aaron Pullum taking the only wickets. In reply, Billingborough were 178 all out, Ellie Stanley scoring 14, Paul Goodwin 43, Bill Sadler 22 and Jed Humphries 40 not out.
Result of the day in division one saw mid-table Moulton Harrox defeat league leaders Market Deeping 2nds. Harrox batted first and were 160 all out, Mike Kearns Snr hitting 32, Chris Beale 25, Matthew Barnett 26, Jack Barnett 21, Simon Juckes 16 and Ansar Hussain 17. For Deeping, Nick Andrews took 4-49 , Karl Green 2-38 and there was a wicket apiece for Joe Pearson and Richard Witt.
Deeping looked like they were cruising to victory at 116-3 but they lost the last seven wickets for just 40 runs as Harrox pulled off a thrilling four-run win. Simon Juckes took 3-27, Louis Greetham 2-24, Ansar Hussain 2-26 and Jack Barnett 2-28.
Spalding 2nd are fourth in the table after a home win against eighth placed Pinchbeck. Harry Wilco hit 65 for Pinchbeck as they were 202 all out and Matt Gill scored an unbeaten 59 for the hosts as they won with three wickets to spare.
Struggling Baston are bottom of the table after a nine wicket defeat away at Boston 3rd. The visitors batted first and scored 158-8, with Andy Keen (24), Ben Hudson (22), Chris Good-Loan (16), John Lamin (31 not out), Liam Davies (24) and Rowan Good-Loan (12) the major scorers.
In reply, Boston knocked off the required runs from just 24.2 overs, John Lamin taking the solitary wicket.
In division two, Long Sutton 2nds' game at Uffington and Billingborough 2nds' game against Sleaford 3rds were both cancelled.
