Andy Prior is the winner of Welland Yacht Club’s morning points series
Andy Prior claimed a clean sweep across all four races to take overall victory in Welland Yacht Club’s morning points series.
Prior was among the five boats that took to the water on Sunday in quite blustery conditions for the final two races in the competition.
Prior (Laser Radial) and Gerri van Haren (Phantom) gained the early lead from Neal Tack and crew Rebecca Slator (Graduate), Mark Holland and Alistair Mitchell both in Laser Radials.
As they tacked their way to the windward mark, van Haren took the lead from Prior while Holland and Mitchell moved up to third and fourth respectively.
Positions would remain on the run back until van Haren retired near the end of the first lap giving the lead back to Prior.
On rounding the windward mark for the second time, Holland capsized allowing Mitchell to move into third and again positions would remain unchanged throughout the third lap.
Prior took first spot after the handicaps were applied with Mitchell second and the Tack/Slater combination third.
For the second race of the day the course was altered to provide two longer laps with the same five competitors taking to the start.
It was again Prior and van Haren who got away first from Tack/Slator and then Holland and Mitchell.
Van Haren then lost ground as his sail slipped and had to be reset as Holland moved to second and Mitchell to third.
However, it was then Mitchell who suffered the misfortune of his mainsheet coming loose and he slipped to the back of the fleet while re-fastening it.
Once around the windward mark, van Haren was up to third and closing in for the second spot, however, the positions would remain unchanged throughout the second lap.
Prior was again the winner after the handicaps with Holland second and Tack/Slator third.
Prior was the overall winner from Tack and Slator in second and Holland third.
