Burton wins final race of sailing season
This unique season for Welland Yacht Club was finally completed as Paul Burton won the last series on Sunday.
The rain and wind fortunately held off and six boats took to the start of the race.
As the five minute countdown to the start ticked away, Paul Burton (Supernova) and Andy Prior (Laser Radial) made the most of the start.
They were soon followed by Alan Cox (Laser Radial), Gerri van Haren (Phantom), Gail Follington (Topper) and Alistair Mitchell (Laser Radial).
Burton would soon open up a lead and van Haren moved up to second but with both their boats quicker than the laser radials and the topper, class handicaps would play their part in the final results.
When all the boats rounded the windward mark, the order remained Burton, van Haren, Prior, Cox, Mitchell and Follington.
However, it started to become more difficult for the competitors as the wind suddenly become stronger, and they struggled to cope with the changing conditions, the gusts of wind nearly catching some of the competitors out as they started the second and final lap.
As the positions stood, Prior was tryingto keep within handicap distance of Burton and Follington was trying to keep within handicap distance of both of them.
Burton was first across the line from van Haren, then Prior, Cox, Mitchell and finally Follington.
Once class handicaps were applied Burton would retain the win from Prior in second, and Follington moved up to third.
